Volcanoes National Park lies to the north which protects the Rwandan portion of the Virunga mountains, atransfrontier conservation area that includes protected areas in Uganda and DRC and forms acomplex of mostly dormant volcanoes. It includes the Rwandas highest point mount Karisimbi, and the two active volcanoes, mount Nyiragongo and mount Nyamuragire.
The national park not only boasts almost the 100 bird species but is notably celebrated for being home to the world last remaining mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. They are other tourism activities like the Diana fossy tomb trail, mountain Bisoke crater lake hike, Karisimbi volcano hike, community and cultural based activities(traditional healers, traditional experiences, dancing, brick making and local brew) , the twine lakes (Burera and Ruhondo) and the golden monkey trekking.
The gorilla families in the park include :Sabinyo, Amahoro, Umubano, Susa, Kwitonda, Agashya, Hirwa to mention but a few.
