The park is the oldest in Uganda with the size of 3840sq km.Murchison Falls National Park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escapment tumbles into vast palm dotted savannah. It is the largest park in Uganda. The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, which plunges 45m over the remnant rift valley wall, creating the dramatic murchison falls, the centrepiece of the park and the final event in an 80km stretch of rapids.At Murchison falls, the Nile squeezes through an 8m wide gorge and plunges with athunderous roar into the Devils cauldron", creating atrademark rainbow.
Vegetation cover:- Open grassland dotted with Borassus palm, Riverline woodland, forest patches, lakes, rivers, Papyrus swamps and dry and wet woodland. It hosts 76 species of mammals, 451 species of birds and 14 of reptiles. Fish and butterfly.
Key bird species:- Egyptian plover, Shoe bill, Red winged grey warbler, Rock pranticole, Secretary bird, bat hawk, Denham’s bustard, Pels fishing owl, White crested turaco, Vinaceous dove, Senegal thicknee, bruces green pigeon, Chestnut crowned sparrow weaver, Carmine bee eater, Night jars(pennant winged &Standard winged),White rumped canary etc
The activities include:birding, game drives along buligi tracks,hiking and nature walks,launch trips, sport fishing and cultural encounters.
